10 Tips to a Better Night’s Sleep…for MOM
“I am SO tired!” This is one of the main personal complaints of moms. Lack of rest makes us crabby, impatient, and often sick. Why are we so incredibly worn out?
The most common reason is moms today are over scheduled, over booked, and overwhelmed. Take a careful and honest inventory of the commitments on the calendar. What can you drop? What duties can be delegated? How can you reorganize, synthesize, and prioritize better? And if you’re stressed, your husband and children are probably feeling the angst as well. Busyness is not a badge of honor. Trust me, I’ve been there along with my own family. Check this post, Chaotic Calendar: Calming Family Schedules, to relieve the chaos of your family planner then tackle your personal calendar.
Another reason moms aren’t getting enough rest is because we are typically worried about one thing or another. And why is it the worst-case scenario always plays out in our minds in the middle of the night? If at all possible, solve today’s problems today and leave tomorrow’s for another day. “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring it’s own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today” (Matthew 6:34 NLT).
To get a better night’s sleep, try these ten tips. The goal is to be at the top of your game each morning from the moment your feet hit the floor rather than dragging to the coffee pot to get a caffeine jolt to start the day.
10 Terrific Sleep Tips
- Try to stick to a consistent bedtime. Know your body and how many hours are adequate to feel completely rested.
- Keep the bedroom for sleeping and intimacy, only. Move all electronics out of the bedroom, including the television, computer, and tablets. Charge cell phones in the closet in silent mode so you’re not tempted to check social media or text messages.
- Dim the lights at night. Bright overhead lights are not very conducive to sleep.
- Invest in a sound machine to mask house noise or a snoring spouse.
- Try a warm bath and a cup of chamomile tea before bed. Limit your caffeine intake as much as possible.
- Place a lavender sachet or an oil diffuser on the bedside table. Check with your healthcare provider regarding natural sleep aids and other sleep remedies.
- Request a backrub from your spouse to relax. It may end in a romantic interlude, but that’s a good sleep inducer too!
- End your day with prayer. Thank God for His blessings and give Him the concerns of your heart.
- Meditate with praise of the Lord by listing His attributes, A-Z. Focusing on God, rather than tomorrow’s to-do list or other cares, will help center your thoughts positively.
- Meditate on these words from the Bible “ …when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet” (Proverbs 3:24).
May your night be filled with deep sleep and sweet dreams!
