A History of Giving Thanks
I really enjoy history! Stories of long ago that have shaped people and nations are fascinating. The history of Thanksgiving is intriguing.
The first Thanksgiving dinner was celebrated in 1621 with the colonists and Native Americans. Centuries later, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln made the day of thanks official during the Civil War. It makes me think of Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). President Lincoln found a way to draw people together to give thanks to God in the midst of war, a way to rejoice in the blessings of God. The circumstances did not dictate a national celebration, but maybe a nation in strife needed just that, to remember.
Take this time to remember all you are thankful for, family, friends, freedom and most of all faith in Jesus Christ.
Happy Thanksgiving from my home to yours!
