Be Thankful for Our Nation
Give thanks all circumstances!
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln made the day of thanks official during the Civil War. It makes me think of Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). President Lincoln found a way to draw people together to give thanks to God in the midst of war, a way to rejoice in the blessings of God. The circumstances did not dictate a national celebration, but maybe a nation in strife needed just that, to remember.
Because of President Lincoln’s desire to give thanks in all circumstances, how will you remember to be thankful this November? Think of the blessings of freedom, family, friends, and faith. No other nation in the world offers the freedom we have in the United States. It’s a gift to be treasured.
