Encouraging Summer Reading
Encouraging summer reading can be difficult. Sometimes kids need a little incentive to read during the summer months. Here’s a tried and true idea to get kids motivated and reading…Book Bingo! There are kids who are naturally drawn to books. I was one of these kids; flashlight under the pillow, a few books going at one time, and the love of bookstores.
Tips for Book Bingo
- With your children, make a list of reading material from a variety of genre. Include books, comic books, magazines, and at least one book in the Bible.
- Download and print the Book Bingo Board, one for each child. Include Mom and Dad too. For additional fun, ask Grandma and Grandpa to participate.
- Determine what the rewards will be for each successful BINGO on the board (picnic lunch, playtime at the park, pencils, gum, stickers).
- When a book is completed, the reader gives a quick summary of what was read. Then the bingo square is highlighted.
- Each time BINGO is completed, across, down, and the entire board, a reward is given. The final prize is a trip to the local bookstore to choose a book for each kid’s personal library.
Have fun encouraging summer reading with your whole family!
