Overcoming Mom Shaming
Have you been a target for your parenting perspectives, decisions, or actions? Many of us have, for one reason or another and it’s not pleasant! Any act of degrading, criticizing or demoralizing other mom for her parenting choices is considered considered shaming.
There are a few typical reasons moms throw looks and comments at other moms. Insecurity in one’s own choices tops the list. Not being emotionally secure in how one is parenting can suddenly get as boost from condemning someone else. Secondly, stubbornness can cause moms to be critical. When one feels her way is the only method or the very best method, others need to be wrong if they don’t agree or comply. Thirdly, jealousy can creep into the realm of mom shaming, intentionally or unintentionally, because some moms just have more options. Lastly, the most innocuous reason for mom shaming is a true desire to help another mom, but the manner in which the suggestion is made causes feelings of shame rather than a willingness to share and learn.
If you’ve encountered mom shaming, here are seven ideas to use to overcome.
7 Tips to Overcome Mom Shaming
- Stay positive. A happy heart squelches ugliness.
- Persevere. You were divinely called to be the mother of your child. Use scripture for encouragement.
- Refrain from retaliating or escalating the situation. A short and simple answer is best.
- If the slam is on social media, ignore, delete or offer a quick answer like, “Thanks for sharing you opinion.”
- Find a supportive group of friends who encourage and accept you and your parenting choices.Be a supportive friend to others who are shamed by others.
- Consider the source of the comment. Usually it’s the same person or group of moms who always have an opinion on everyone’s childrearing practices.
- Pray, giving God your sadness, frustration, and anger will provide peace.
