The Purpose in a Grandchild’s Name
Do you know the purpose in your grandchild’s name? A name can shape a child. A name can provide a sense of belonging, comfort, and purpose. Grandparents can make connections and build relationships through their grandchildren’s given names.
One grandmother, Gail, has found the names of her grandchildren to be an excellent way to connect with the kids, encouraging each one to live into the meaning of their given names. The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names-Their Meanings, Origins, and Spiritual Significance by Dorothy Astoria has been her go-to in determining how to come alongside her grandchildren. She is not one bit surprised to find to God-given connection between the children and their names.
Once she studies the meaning of the name, she purposefully uses the characteristics attributed to the name to encourage the children to live up to and into their names. In playful and purposeful ways, she leads her grandchildren into a life of faith. Cards and notes from Gail remind the children of the beauty of being special in the eyes of God.
Consider how you can use Gail’s example. Set grandchildren apart with purpose as blessed with something as simple, yet profound as the child’s name. Building a relationship is the goal. Gail has connected with her grandchildren in a unique way. God does work in wonderful ways!
A very special thank you to Gail Berger for sharing her thoughts and ideas for connecting with her grandchildren. Carol and I enjoyed our time with Gail! Information regarding Gail’s ministry, The Blessing House, can be found HERE.
