Water Safety for Kids
Summertime fun is in full swing! Families are gearing up for Fourth of July celebrations. Vacations are in the works too. Many of these events include a trip to the lake or pool. Water safety is a must!
Lakes, ponds, pools, hot tubs, and even fountains can be possible drowning risks for children. Diligence and precautionary measures can help to protect kids from water accidents. Here are a few considerations to keep your family safe this summer.
• Adult supervision is necessary at all times.
• Invest in swimming lessons for your children. But keep in mind if you’re children know how to swim, they still need to be watched carefully when near water.
• Provide life jackets. Choose Coast Guard approved personal floatation devices that fit each family member well. Having a mandatory life jacket rule for kids on docks, in boats, and even at the pool with younger children is a good idea. Children under the age of five should have life jackets with a collar and a strap between the legs. The collar will keep the child’s head out of the water and the strap will keep the PDF on the child. Be a good role model. Wear your life jacket too!
• Insist children walk, never run, near water. Pool decks and docks can be very slippery.
• Stay hydrated! Have water bottles for each family member.
• Use sunscreen and reapply often. Hats, sunglasses, and rash guards are good choices to protect kids from the sun too. Keep in mind the sun’s rays reflect off the water, making the chance of sunburn even greater.
• Have fun! Enjoy the great outdoors and water activities safely!
Many blessings for a wonderful Independence Day!
