Benefits of Intentional Friendships for Parents

A new school year is about to begin! Kids are ready to jump into learning and fun. Parents are ready to get back into a regular schedule. It’s exciting to watch children prepare not only for another academic year, but a classroom of new friends.

The same can be said for parents. New volunteer prospects, activities, and even new neighbors bring opportunities for fresh friendships. The benefits of friendship are many. Why? Because friends…

  • encourage healthy behaviors.
  • boosts self-esteem.
  • celebrate happy times.
  • help face adverse life events.
  • offer support.
  • assist in coping with stress.
  • provide social connections (peace, relaxation).
  • keep us healthy with fewer cardiovascular, immune, and stress related health issues.

Parents are the models for our children in all aspects of life including the realm of relationships. Being intentional is necessary more so than in the past. Friendships are different because of changes in society. The Internet, work hours, social media, transient culture, and our “can-do” attitude isolate us. Being intentional, thinking of specific ways to connect with parents of similar interests and life circumstances is helpful. And faith-filled friendships add love, support, and encouragement in the parenting journey.

As the school year begins, take a few minutes to consider these questions.

How will you be intentional in building new relationships with the parents of your child’s friends?
What are the qualities you like in a friend?
What personal characteristics make you a good friend to others?
How do you intend to connect with others at school, church, in the neighborhood, and community?
How can you be more inviting to new parents in your child’s school or the neighborhood?

Do to others as you would have them do to you.
