The Christmas Snowflake Tradition

Snowflakes are indicative of Christmas in Minnesota. For a snow lover, a white Christmas is of the utmost importance! My family’s Christmas snowflake tradition fills my heart with love, light, and snowflakes.

Traditions bind families together, creating and maintaining connections to the past, especially Christmas traditions. This time of year, we often return to the tried-and-true traditions that have been carried down through the generations. The familiarity brings cohesiveness, comfort, and joy.

All family traditions have a beginning. Twenty-one years ago, Scott and I moved into a new house. To mark the transition, my in-laws gave me a Swarovski snowflake ornament. Each consecutive year, the triangular package would be waiting for me to open. I’d joyfully anticipate adding to the collection. The ornaments became a tradition of love. No one in the family loves snow like I do, so the gift had a double meaning, for our home and my heart.

Each year, I carefully hang the snowflakes from greenery woven into our kitchen light fixture. The crystals play with the light, making the room sparkle. They decorate the room through Valentine’s Day.

Scott’s parents now celebrate Christmas in heaven. He and I have continued the snowflake Christmas tradition, purchasing the ornaments on trips or from unique stores. Keeping the tradition his parents started is important to us.

Traditions are woven into the fabric of families. Each year I’m incredibly grateful for the Christmas tradition my mother-in-law and father-in-law began many years ago. I think I’ll always love snowflakes, indoors and out.
