Three Truths for Traumatic Times
The past few months have been unprecedented and unnerving for all of us. The parents I work with are concerned with the effects of theses traumatic times of the pandemic and economic upheaval. Mom and dad are the first line of defense for children. There are three truths to share with children when chaos in the world is creating anxiety.
- God is in control.
Reassure you children with scripture that God is on His throne and in control of all that happens here on earth. Speak in a calm manner, in close proximity, looking directly into your child’s eyes.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6
Listen to your child’s fears. Pray specifically for the concerns of the heart. - You are loved.
Unconditional love is a gift a parent gives a child. Tell your kids often, with conviction, how much each one is loved. - You are safe.
Make your home a sanctuary, a place of refuge, for the whole family. This “home base” is where your child will feel loved, protected, and safe. Answer questions to alleviate stress. Home is a place to ask questions and discuss what’s going on in the world.
It is the Lord who goes before you.
He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you.
Do not fear or be dismayed.
