A Family’s First Mission Statement

Is your family more important than a Fortune 500 company? Most parents in classes I’ve led eagerly nod their heads and respond emphatically, “Yes, of course!” Large corporations and organization have mission statements to use as a guide for business practices and to set the tone of the company’s culture. Yet most families don’t have a set statement of intent.

In faith-filled families, mission statements come from a desire to be centered in Christ. The focus and goals of the family are clearly stated. Consider what you and your family believes in, the attributes to describe the type of family you aspire to be, and how to accomplish the mission set forth by the family.

The questions below may be used as a guide to formulate your family’s mission statement. Butcher paper, a whiteboard/chalkboard will be helpful in gathering ideas. Each member of the family is encouraged to participate, no matter what age.

  • What words describe our family (attributes, characteristics)?
  • What are our values?
  • What is our vision? Who do we want to be?
  • What is our focus as a family?
  • How will we accomplish the vision/focus?

Narrow the list, combining similar thoughts and words to write a concise statement.

The ________________ Family desires to be Christ-centered, (add attributes and values). Our vision is to …  We will accomplish this by…
Signed, (all family members)

Each mission statement is different, just as each family is unique. The statement will need to be updated as the family grows and the children mature. Have the mission statement posted in your home in a central location. Refer to it often and praise your kids when they live by the statement of intent and faith set forth by the family.

May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
