A Mountaintop Moment

Downhill skiing is one of my family’s favorite sports. Minnesota skiing is fun but mountain skiing is exhilarating. There’s something about the anticipation of a long run down the slope that gets the adrenaline pumping. Smelling the pines, hearing the swoosh of snow on each turn, and seeing the delighted smiles on the kids’ faces delights me. I love to hear their laughter as they spray one another with snow or race to the lifts. Having time away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday grind of work and school is great. Being together, just the four of us, makes it even more special.

Mountains have always fascinated me. The sharp craggy rocks and snow-capped peaks are majestic. One cannot help but to feel closer to heaven. Mountaintop moments are sprinkled throughout the Bible as locations where God’s people have experienced the holy presence of the Lord.

While on the mountaintop one morning I was reminded of the transfiguration of Christ. How awestruck the disciples must have been to see Jesus shining like the sun, radiant. And to witness the Lord speaking to Moses and Elijah. Actually hearing the voice of God left them facedown on the ground. His words stand out to me, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him.” Listen…do I take enough time to be quiet and listen? I’m great at talking to God, but how much time do I spend actually listening? Have I taught my children to listen to the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit? I’ve been left thinking about this all week.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. Psalm 90:1-2
