Busy as a Bee

I love this time of year! There’s a chill in the air, the days are growing shorter, and the roadside stands are loaded with produce, cornstalks, and pumpkins. It’s so beautiful with the leaves changing colors. The next three months are loaded with holidays and family gatherings.

But walk into your local store and it’s already Christmas! What about Autumn? Halloween? Thanksgiving?

My brain typically goes into overdrive and I buy into the frenzy. Do you? The to do list grows and the visions of the perfect Christmas starts spinning in my brain…cards, gifts, decorating. The stress level rises. I don’t take the time to soak in the beauty of the here and now.

I really don’t want to be as busy as a bee! It seems like the more jam-packed the calendar, the greater the number of commitments, and the long lists make self worth rise. Why does it seem business equates with importance? Truly…I am NOT that important to anyone, except perhaps Scott, Ryan, and Eric.

It’s time to put the brakes on, to enjoy the here and now. Looking forward is helpful but the Lord tells us to live today fully and completely. Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow James 4:13-14a.

We don’t know what the future holds. Do we really want to miss out on today because we are so busy thinking about tomorrow?

This month we’ll focus on slowing down, simplifying, and prioritizing to keep the next few months in perspective. Let’s not miss out on the gift of today or the opportunity to celebrate the gifts God has given us, most importantly His Son.

Here are a few questions to get you started?

• What’s the toughest challenge with your family schedule?
• What do you want to do more of in the next three months?
• What can you do less on in the next three months?
• How does your family calendar reflect your priorities? Here’s a link to a post with ideas to get a handle on the chaotic family calendar.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of it’s own.
