Creating a Home Learning Routine
Creating a home learning routine will save a lot of angst for you and your kids. Are you home, leading your children in their online schoolwork? Schools around the nation are closed to protect families and staff from the spread of COVID-19. While the family time can be a plus, suddenly having your kitchen table become a classroom for all subject matter may be intimidating.
A routine will benefit the whole family. Listening, hearing, and responding to the needs of family members will help to lessen stress. A plan will help you and your kids to be on-task and organized. Keep the timing of the daily plan fluid, but bedtime consistent. Download the “Planning Guide for at Home Learning” to get started.
Helpful Hints for Creating Home Learning Routine
- Plan ahead by preparing for the lessons. Elementary students can assist with the daily plan, especially with the online learning provided by their school teachers.
- Break up the day into specific areas of learning. Mix large motor and fine motor activities.
- Enlist your children’s help in meal preparation and clean-up. Have a check-in time to talk about how each family member is feeling and what each person needs from others.
- Providing dedicated time to play allows your child to practice new skills from the daily lessons.
- Use Quiet Time as an opportunity for everyone to rest, read, and have some down time. It’s an excellent habit for all family members.
- Chore Time is an opportunity to instill life skills. Even young kiddos can help with family chores. “All hands on deck” is a time to make common spaces in your home neat and will be well worth the team effort!
- Spend the evening with a family activity or game. Make smores in the fireplace. Read a chapter book together. Cuddle and tell family stories.
- Stick to the normal bedtime routine to provide consistency for your children. Then take time for you!
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven…
