Memories for Your Grandchildren

Memories are made when we connect with the ones we love. What memories have you built with your grandchildren? Ask your grandkids to describe you. What words or phrases do you think they will use? Interesting question to ask children of all ages!

As a Christian grandparent, do your grandchildren have any idea why you have a faith in Christ? Taking the time to discuss why you believe what you do is an important conversation to have with little children, teens, and young adults. “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect...” (1 Peter 3:15).

Our senior generation has been most fortunate to have many opportunities and to have memories of how we’ve pursued these many opportunities. Of course, it has not always been perfect, but it has been amazing. However the future may be quite different for our grandchildren as the culture changes. Maybe it is time to make a plan to pass on our beliefs and wisdom.

Questions to Consider as a Grandparent

What do you want to be remembered for? These are a few examples.

  • Listening Well
  • Following Christ and sharing His truth
  • Doing the right thing
  • Being a helping hand
  • Being positive
  • Being a good friend, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, associate
  • Praying every day
  • Showing compassion
  • Being fun and will to try new things
  • Sharing with those less fortunate
  • Being honest
  • Accepting responsibility

Do you have a quote that your grandchildren will always remember? These are a few examples.

  • The harder you work the luckier you will be.
  • Patience is a virtue
  • How do you know you can’t if you haven’t tried?
  • Trust in the Lord

Your sharing does not need to be profound or deep. In fact, it’s better if it can be simple and stated succinctly. Children remember short phrases.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo uses three simple truths over and over when he relates to the younger generation. “Work hard, keep your faith, and tell the truth.” Short, simple, and wise.

Share your wisdom and life experience with your grandchildren. Your words might be just what is needed for your grandchildren to learn.

Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard
from me, the faith and love that are in Jesus Christ.
2 Timothy 1:13
