Reminiscing Thanksgiving

When I was a little girl, we celebrated Thanksgiving at my great aunt’s home. She would roast an enormous turkey to feed the entire extended family. My dad was always in charge of carving the bird. I would stand next to him, watching and waiting. He would slice off bite-size pieces for me to sample while he prepared the platter of meat for the family. Turkey tastes the best when it’s hot, freshly sliced with a little salt. We would all gather around the table for the blessing, then dig in.

Afterward, there would be mountains of dishes to wash. This is when I learned so much about my family and life. My sister and I would be handed dishtowels and the lessons would begin. The conversation was priceless, new recipes, how to remove stains from linen tablecloths, whose husband was expecting a job transfer. Politics and religion were part of the discussion too. The older ladies talked and the younger ones learned-values, morals, and how to handle those tricky stains. Many years later, I’m so grateful!

This Thanksgiving, turn off the TV, Play Station, and even cell phones. Involve your kids in the preparations and the clean up. After dinner play board games, take a walk around the block, enjoy time together. Families are God’s idea. Thank Him for the blessing! While you’re all together for the holiday, spend time drawing closer to one another and the One who has blessed your family.

Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!
Revelation 7:12

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! May your family be abundantly blessed.
